First of the series for “Goodbye Real World” this piece explores the meme of “Falling down a rabbit hole” which when conceptualised by Lewis Carol was used to mean stumbling into a bizarre, disorienting alternate reality. The phrase now means a person who becomes interested in something to the point of obsession or distraction — fully immersed to a degree that the subject in question might not seem to merit. Going down a rabbit hole is used to describe people who follow conspiracies online. “He has gone down the rabbit hole on that one.” The double meaning of the beginning of the adventure and the surrender to the journey, but also going down an internet “rabbit hole.” “Alice” begins her digital journey by falling in, following the white rabbit, which could represent anything, but chasing something that looks amazing or intriguing that holds maybe the answers to all your questions and makes you want to follow and dig further. While the experience could be worthwhile, it tends to distract from the substantial mission of ‘real work.’ Or is a distraction from Real Life, hence “I can’t take the real world anymore, Goodbye Real World!” It is the escape to an unknown realm where you may learn amazing things, but at the end the deadline will be delayed and it might all just end up being a big waste of time. This represent the first stage of the philosophers journey that of Dreaming, similar to when you fall asleep and feel like you are falling. Down the Rabbit Hole to sleep, to dream, to experience.
