Vacancy is the second piece of the series “Goodbye Real World.” It represents the second stage of the philosophers journey. Destruction. After succumbing to the digital reality “Alice” is now disembodied, she has given up herself to the digital world. It asks the question “In the digital world what are we?” If we only live on devices then the essential parts of our bodies are different. Legs?! Who needs then now? All you need are eyes and a brain and a way to interact with the digital world, the electronic device. There are so many nowadays, they are everywhere, everyone has one, your lost without it. Soon we will make the device part of us and have it implanted directly into our brain as a microchip. If we have one added to us then who are we? If the digital world is the world we pay most attention to, who are you without a device? In the digital world we have a representation that we choose, but then what of the “meat” left behind? The device sucks us in further, into the experience, like a wormhole to another dimension the laptop can take you anywhere.
